Veikkausliiga week 11 - Banzai in Helsinki, JJK finally win

Following quickly from Wednesday's matches comes another round of Veikkausliiga fixtures. No wonder people are moaning about the amount of games. I can barely keep up. This is the last round before the international break...

HJK 1-2 KuPS

Saturday's only match brought more pain for the champions. It was graduation day, but (bad pun alert) the only team to come out with full honours were the boys from Kuopio.

HJK had come into the match with some bad feeling, having nine players called up for internationals bringing the fixture congestion into focus (they'd asked for their next game against Inter to be postponed, but were turned down). But KuPS had other things to worry about - their recovery after a bad start was hitting the skids, but both came flying out of the blocks, both keepers making saves within the first two minutes.

Miikka Ilo opens the scoring

It was Miikka Ilo who put KuPS ahead just before half-time, beating Wallen. But with seventy minutes gone, Mikael Forssell pounced on a strange header from Omar Colley and levelled the scores at 1-1. Former HJK man Dawda Bah returned in a yellow jersey, and sealed the three points for KuPS with a beautifully curled shot from just outside the box. His celebration was limited to a small wave, nothing too inflammatory...

Eight minutes left, it was 1-2 to the visitors, and that's how it ended, despite a late effort from Sakari Mattila in Fergie Time, saved by Hilander.

The first shouts of (Sixten) "Boström Out" were heard from a small section of HJK fans, and his tenure is already looking shaky. While it's accepted that he'll be truly judged on his performance in Europe, he's in danger of slipping behind in the race for the title. They've lost three of their last four home games, having not lost at home in the league since 2010. KuPS meanwhile are frustrating and excellent in equal measure this year, but will take great pride in their second away win of the season.

MYPA 0-1 JJK

After ten games, JJK finally won a league match - and in the process stopped MYPA from closing the gap at the top to one point.

Babatunde's third goal in three games won it, scored after 55 minutes. MYPA have now lost two league games in a row, perhaps getting a nosebleed when so near the top.

Highlights of MYPA 0-1 JJK

MYPA have sixteen points from ten matches, while JJK are now eleventh with their six - after Lahti drop below them as their RoPS forfeit has been ratified.

IFK Mariehamn 0-1 VPS

VPS had never lost a league game at Mariehamn. With ten minutes remaining, they ensured that record continued with a goal from Jyrki Saranpää. It's hard to say too much, as the camera didn't zoom on the goal, or provide a replay, but there was a collision between Saranpää and IFK keeper Otso Virtanen.

Highlights of IFK Mariehamn 0-1 VPS

VPS are second now, equal on twenty points with HJK and Honka but with a goal difference of +3. IFK Mariehamn have only won two of their last eight, and they sit eighth with fifteen points from 11 games.

Inter 0-1 Honka

The live game on Urho wasn't much of an advert for Finnish football. There were few chances, some poor finishing, and a bit of a scrappy affair.

But it was a classy finish from Tim Väyrynen that sealed another win for Honka. After 65 minutes, the ball broke to the forward, he pushed into the area and chipped in over the advancing Inter keeper. It was his first start since coming back from injury, and his second goal. Inter meanwhile looked pretty clueless, their only decent chance was when Diallo headed against the crossbar.

Highlights of Inter 0-1 Honka

Honka are third in the table now, level on 20 points with HJK and VPS. This was their fourth league win in a row. Inter drop to seventh on fifteen points.

Jaro 2-1 RoPS

Another away Veikkausliiga game for RoPS, another defeat. This was their eighteenth defeat in nineteen.

Jaro took the lead just before half-time, in-form Trinidad striker Shahdon Winchester departs for international duty with his third in four games. A penalty from Jonas Emet midway through the second half gave the hosts some breathing space, while a last minute penalty from RoPS forward Kokko was merely a consolation.

Highlights of Jaro 2-1 RoPS

RoPS are currently tenth in the table, their thirteen points from eleven matches being inflated by their home form. Jaro are ninth, with fourteen points from ten matches.

Lahti 0-1 TPS

It perhaps wasn't too surprising that TPS were triumphant here. With only one win, against a nervous KuPS, they haven't shown many signs of improvement. Despite a heavy recruitment of young Finns, it was TPS who scored the only goal.

A second half corner was headed in (superbly) by Jani Tanska after 52 minutes. TPS lost Joonas Tursas to a second yellow card on 67 minutes, and he'll serve a one match ban.

The highlights are here, which takes you to the ESS website.

Lahti are currently twelth with five points, as their 1-1 draw with RoPS was confirmed as a 0-3 defeat. TPS are fifth, on sixteen points.

----------------------------------------

We now have an international break, Finland will play Belarus home and away. The next domestic fixtures are on Thursday 13th June. I'll be in Finland, at Jaro v JJK on the 13th, and Honka v HJK on the 16th.

Veikkausliiga week 10 - a thriller in Turku, Honka go third

Perhaps 'week 10' is incorrect - the many recent moans of the Veikkausliiga coaches relate to the number of matches being played. Maybe 'round 10' is more appropriate. Either way, Wednesday saw another full round of fixtures, for most teams a third match in six days. Here's what happened...

TPS 2-4 IFK Mariehamn

Undoubtedly the match of the week, it had goals and drama. Two of Finland's Europa League representatives met in Turku, both needing to find some consistency.

Mariehamn's Jamaican striker Dever Orgill was the key man - he scored twice (31 and 54 minutes) to give the visitors a 0-2 lead, and he has five goals in four games. TPS looked dead and buried, but they managed to pull it back - English midfielder Wayne Brown got one back from the penalty spot on 74 minutes, and substitute Aleksi Ristola equalised eight minutes later with a fantastic finish after a poor clearance.

But Brazilian midfielder Diego Assis gave Mariehamn the lead again with a fine effort, and IFK sub Kris Bright came on and got a late fourth. A cracking end to the game, and signs that IFK Mariehamn can get by without injured Petteri Forsell. TPS meanwhile lose for the fourth time in nine games, and are showing a Jekyll and Hyde character to their performances.

TPS are seventh in the league, with thirteen points from nine games. IFK Mariehamn are sixth, with fifteen points from their ten matches.

Honka 1-0 Lahti

Honka's fourth league win in a row took an age to come, and they certainly made it difficult against a Lahti side who are in a definite funk.

Kastriot Kastrati had scored five goals in his previous five matches, but he will remember this game for the wrong reasons. Two yellow cards in four first half minutes saw him leave the field after just 27 minutes. It took 87 minutes for the only goal of the game to arrive, and it was Antti Mäkijärvi with a sharp free kick from 30 metres, beating Jesse Joronen.

Highlights of Honka 1-0 Lahti

Honka now sit third in the table, seventeen points from ten matches, and only three behind the leaders. Lahti are eleventh, with six points from nine games, three ahead of bottom side JJK, but now five points from 10th.

JJK 1-3 HJK

HJK streamed this game live, but I wasn't sure if it was a poor feed, or the pitch was really that bad. Either way, it was bottom against top, and it's not hard to guess what happened.

The champions opened the scoring after 21 minutes, through Demba Savage's fifth league goal of the season. Shortly after, JJK striker Babatunde Wusu took a yellow card for a ridiculous dive, but made up for it with a neat goal on 31 minutes, pouncing on poor defending. Teemu Tainio, returning after a 3 match ban, was subbed off just after in clear discomfort. The second half saw HJK toil, but eventually take the win after goals by Sumusalo (77) and Forssell (83).

HJK extend their lead at the top to three points (ahead of VPS), they have twenty points from ten games. JJK are still stuck in twelvth, three points from nine games.

VPS 2-1 Jaro

The derby of Ostrobothnia saw the men from Vaasa triumph, but they left it late. VPS had started well this season, tipped by most to struggle. Jaro meanwhile had played well in most games, but were dropping too many points.

Ameobi, in black and white stripes, holding off the defender

It was Jaro who took the lead, Jonas Emet scoring a penalty on 38 minutes. But VPS came back with an early goal in the second half, Jarno Parikka's attempted pass going in off Mathias Kullström just a minute after the break. Parikka himself scored the winner after a quick throw-in, eight minutes from the end, his third league goal of 2013. The result also means Finland midfielder Tim Sparv needs to sort out nine signed shirts, after running a contest on his Twitter to guess the score and final scorer.

Highlights of VPS 2-1 Jaro

VPS go back up to second in the table, with seventeen points from nine games - three behind HJK with a game in hand. Jaro are tenth, with eleven points from nine games, and five ahead of eleventh-place Lahti.

RoPS 2-1 MYPA

The need to avoid travel obviously suits RoPS well. A fourth win in six home games against MYPA, who'd started the day second, keeps the points tally ticking over nicely.

New arrival Nicholas Otaru scored both goals for the hosts, one in each half, his first since signing from Honka over the winter. MYPA got a consolation through Thomas Aho with four minutes remaining, not that you may realise - I doubt more than a handful of fans made the long trip from Kouvala to Rovaniemi.

Highlights of RoPS 2-1 MYPA

RoPS sit in eighth place after their ten games, with 13 points. MYPA drop to fourth, with sixteen points from nine matches.

KuPS 1-1 Inter

Kuopio played host to a fairly uneventful 1-1 draw, with KuPS sliding back into mediocrity, after a promising lift in form. Dudu headed in from a corner after 59 minutes, but Inter saved a point with a goal from Irakli Sirbiladze with six minutes left. It was the Georgian's third goal in 2013, still some way to go to match the 17 he scored in 2012.

KuPS are ninth in the table, with twelve points from ten games. Inter are fifth, with fifteen points from their ten matches.
